Javelin district ranking for Taipei

Key findings

Taipei has 28,710 restaurants across 12 districts. Ranked by Javelin's competition score, which is relative within Taipei and not comparable with other counties:

  • No. 1 Daan: score 85, 4,477 venues, density 378 per square kilometre, average rating 4.31, new-registration share 8.0%
  • No. 2 Datong: 76, 1,820 venues, density 487, rating 4.23, share 7.9%
  • No. 3 Xinyi: 67, 2,833 venues, density 250, rating 4.22, share 8.2%
  • No. 4 Zhongshan: 64, 4,495 venues, density 146, rating 4.29, share 7.8%
  • No. 5 Songshan: 64, 2,488 venues, density 224, rating 4.26, share 8.6%
  • Last, Beitou: 20, 1,499 venues, density 36, rating 4.20, share 7.0%

Worth noting:

  • Daan scores highest at 85, holds about 16% of the city's venues and has the best average rating, 4.31. Crowded and strong, it is the hardest for a newcomer.
  • Zhongshan has the most venues, 4,495, even more than Daan, but a density of only 146 and a score of 64.
  • Datong ranks second with only 1,820 venues but the highest density, 487 per square kilometre.
  • Wanhua has the third-highest density, 413, yet scores only 50, so the score is not density alone.
  • Beitou is the easiest at 20.

Reading it correctly

  1. More venues does not mean more competition. Look at count and density together.
  2. The score is relative. 85 does not mean you cannot succeed; Daan also has the highest average rating.
  3. Density is an estimate based on the bounding area of each district's venues, not the official district area, so compare within one county only.
  4. Low competition can mean low demand. Combine it with customer profile and rent.
  5. New-registration share is new registrations in the last 12 months divided by operating venues. Neihu is highest at 9.0% and Songshan 8.6%, with scores of 40 and 64. Newcomers may be moving toward less crowded districts, which still needs on-site checks.
